This is a music production tutorial demonstrating how to make a tape warp effect in Ableton Live. The methodology is to use a Shifter audio effect to make subtle changes to the pitch, and to use an LFO as a modulator to automate the "Fine" pitch parameter of the Shifter while adding a touch of randomness. This is a simple approach and the settings outlined in the videos are just a starting place. Trust your ears and experiment!
This effect is very useful for giving your tracks a Lo-Fi feel, since it is intended to simulate running an audio source through a vintage cassette deck or vinyl record player. You can use your own original audio to make LoFi music without copyright problems.

This is a cover of Nobuo Uematsus Main Theme from the original Final Fantasy game for the NES. It was recorded with a Korg DS-8 synthesizer. The Korg DS-8 has an interesting story...
In the 1970s Yamaha began developing a type of synthesis known as Frequency Modulation (or FM for short). They released the GS-1, and later the more famous DX-7 in the early 1980s which made use of the new technology. Since Yamaha held the patent for FM synthesis, Korg had to license it from them to develop the DS-8, which was released in 1987. The DS-8 is sort of a stripped down version of the DX-7, but has its own character and charm. Since Final Fantasy was released in 1987 in Japan, I thought it would be fitting to record this classic piece of music with an actual DS-8.

The Final Fantasy series has always been my favorite video game series of all time - however, last summer I realized that I had never played Final Fantasy V. I decided I would jump into it and make a cover album once I got a feel for the characters and story. The result was 10 tracks of jammy, instrumental, video game covers. When I began playing with the pieces, I found that many of them left quite a lot of space for musical exploration, so the direction I took was to try to incorporate all the familiar elements of the Final Fantasy sound world we all know and love, but put them in a new sonic landscape.
This album is also important for me because it is the first full length album that I created entirely by myself, and is my first attempt at engineering/producing. Ill be posting a few tracks here on YouTube each week until theres none left, then maybe releasing it on the streaming platforms after that.

I spent many hours waking up before dawn and playing Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest for hours before school back in the early 90s. The game itself is a bit of an after thought for most people, but it offered some really great music - so here is my Lo-Fi Hip Hop arrangement of Mystic Ballad.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[b] is a role-playing video game developed by Square and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1996.[c] It was the final Mario game published for the SNES. Super Mario RPGs story focuses on Mario and his friends as they seek to defeat the Smithy Gang, who has crashed into their world and scattered the seven star pieces of Star Road. Super Mario RPG is the first RPG in the Mario franchise, drawing from major elements of Squares RPG franchises such as Final Fantasy. The main form of fighting enemies is turn-based combat with a party of up to three characters. It is also the first game in the Mario franchise to have gameplay within an isometric 3D environment, allowing for a new variety of the exploration and platforming elements reminiscent of the Super Mario series.

The Legend of Zelda, originally released in Japan as The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu,[b][8][c] is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo.[9] The first game of The Legend of Zelda series, it is set in the fantasy land of Hyrule and centers on an elf-like boy named Link, who aims to collect the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom in order to rescue Princess Zelda from Ganon.[10] The player controls Link from a top-down perspective and navigates throughout the overworld and dungeons, collecting weapons, defeating enemies and uncovering secrets along the way.[11]

The fifth of Bachs 15 Sinfonias (three part inventions) arranged for FamiTracker.
I took a different approach with this project than I did with the Two Part Inventions. Since latter is composed of only two voices, I used the empty channels in the FamiTracker to simulate reverb and delay effects to give the pieces a sense of depth, space, and life. I also kept them in mono, so they were generally a more pure representation of the NES hardware.
Since the Sinfonias introduce a third voice, I decided that I would do most of the sound design inside FamiTracker and export the stems to process inside Ableton Live. The result is less pure to the Chip Tune ethos, but I think service the music in a deeper way. The use of stereo mixing allows for the 3 parts to be spread out across the stereo field, giving the piece a wider sense of perspective - and the use of more conventional reverb and delay effects puts it in more of a real world environment.
As for the pieces themselves, I was less familiar with the Sinfonias than I was the Two Part Inventions. I also didnt do as much consulting of existing recordings for reference. Instead I tried to rely more on my own decisions about tempo, phrasing, and articulations so the interpretations may be less conventional.
