Here is a quick video showing you how I pierced a mug and used glaze to fill the holes making translucent windows. Not a complete fail, but I think it was worth the try.
Traditionally, the holes may have been oblong and arranged in specific patterns ("rice pattern"). I simply drilled a variety of holes to see if I could get it to work.
If I do it again, I will use a thinner walled cup, make the holes a little smaller, and try a couple of different glazes to see if the holes fill better with one or another.
