Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping. 🍀 Would like to welcome you each to come along with me on this beautiful evening. We are going to make a old fashioned historical drink recipe called a shrub.
Just remember I always no matter what have a adverse reaction to vinegar and will always cough. This drink is absolutely delicious and you betcha I drank all of it regardless of the coughing. 😉
Shrubs are so delicious and good for you. The multitude of different ingredients you can use to make a shrub are so many. You can mix and match to your hearts desire and be healthy and happy making them.
The Colonist's and Victorian's used ‘fruit vinegars’ in the same way we would enjoy a cordial, and a version of a shrub was used to fight the onslaught of scurvy that plagued the British Navy in the 18th century. When prohibition took place in the US, shrubs became the popular alternative to alcoholic drinks. Shrub is a vinegar-based, cordial-like fruit syrup that is often mixed with sparkling water or spirits to create a refreshing or enlivening drink. It actually originated as a way of preserving perishable fruit, like berries, for a bit longer. The word itself comes from the Arabic word Sharab, which translates ‘to drink’. Its origins date back to Turkey and Persia, where they were traditionally referred to as Sherbets.
There are two methods of preparing a delicious Shrub. You can use the hot method which I partially made or the cold method. Either way they are both delicious. In all actuality my method combines both ways just with a twist.
You will do fine making a shrub as long as you stick to the 2:2 ratio. From there yes you can make larger batches as long as you stick to the equal amounts of all the ingredients.
2 cups of blueberries, other berries or fruit/ preferably fresh of your choice
2 cups of honey, maple syrup or cane sugar
2 cups of either apple cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, white wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar
2 cups of filtered water
2 cups of fresh lemon verbena, cut up
2 cups of fresh Tulsi, cut up
Hope this video encourages you to also try your hand at making your own shrub. You definitely will not regret it one bit. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them in the comment section below I will answer them as soon as possible. Everyone take care and have a blessed day. ❤🍀🦉
Blessings,
Teresa 🦉
