I wanted a to find a good axe and sword to use as a machete under $50. I bought a low cost axe and sword and customized them! Hand made blades by experts will always have greater quality than mass produced cheap ones but not everyone has the budget for one-off craftsmanship. I personally also find that I am more likely to use something as a tool if I don't see it as precious. I bought a small katana and an axe that are serviceable enough for my weekly use out in Joshua tree and then modified them into tools I am proud to have on display.
