Baklava is a beloved staple of Greek cuisine. The eight-layer pastry is made of filo (a thin, fluffy pastry), butter, nuts, oranges, cinnamon and honey. If it sounds delicious, imagine the smell in the room during the Greek Orthodox church’s annual baklava baking day. Over the course of nearly 10 hours, a small army of Greek women gathered at the church on Alameda Avenue for a day-long baking marathon, resulting in more than 150 pans of baklava.

All that work translates into roughly 4,300 individual pieces of baklava, all of which will be sold at the 60th annual Greek Festival, taking place June 5-7 at the Assumption of the Theotokos Metropolis Cathedral of Denver on Alameda Avenue.
