This is a short video of a makeshift carbon arc lamp that I constructed out of random materials that I had on my desk. The tube is polycarbonate. The carbon cathode is graphite from a wood pencil, and the anode is the aluminum drill chuck end of an old drill bit that I stuck into the lid of a tomato sauce jar. It is powered with 120 volts at 2 amps DC. Because it is so bright, I had to look at it through the gray pad. In person, it looked at least as bright as a welder. The aluminum anode melted after only operating for a short time.
