We often speak of legacies, of leaving one behind, as if, in each of us, there resides an inherent legend, pre-packaged and ready for the history books. Our favorite empty promise is that we’re leaving the world a better place for our children’s children, which typically translates to paying taxes and voting responsibly, perhaps occasionally admonishing someone for littering or throwing some change to a veteran on the side of the road, and, most noticeably, fighting injustice by talking shit on social media. The truth is that most of us are kind of self-absorbed, so we see no issue leading a life that suits our particular needs and sensibilities. We work, raise children, take a few vacations when the boss allows it and happily move on. As long as we protect home base, we’re fine with that. Our legacy is that we “existed”.
However, some of us were raised and educated to vehemently oppose certain aspects of this system. We make it our mission to utilize any social and economic privileges to fight for those in need, spread messages of hope in times of despair, rally for equal rights and set fire to cancerous ideologies with the hope that those who follow will create a more functional model with the ashes. We won’t live long enough to meet these future torch bearers, but we recognize that we ourselves are the proud grandchildren of thousands of brave men and women who risked death, imprisonment, exile and love in the name of fighting injustice, using both violence and creation, depending on what the moment called for. Our aim is to one day be the source material for an inspired revolt waged by future generations, the same way our heroes have led us to ours.
This is opposite of settling down. This is the dismantling of cultural stagnation. And this is what happens every few generations as the pressure builds. Adopt books. Then adopt bolt cutters. Study history relentlessly. Then exploit the modern loopholes to shake some things up. Stand up for someone. Stand up for something. Earn your legacy. Make your move.
