In this video we make ferrous chloride.
First we react 57g of iron metal with 200mL of 30% hydrochloric acid and 300mL of methanol. Once hydrogen evolution ceases the mixture is filtered. One or two large iron nails are placed in the flask and an air-tight simple distillation is assembled. The exhaust port on the distillation adapter is connected to a vacuum system and the distillation is performed under reduced pressure. Once the ferrous chloride is dried, the flask is stoppered and stored until needed.
