Make the compass exactly as instructed, otherwise with different polarity it doesn't work properly. As a compass can be a life saver, the U.S. consumer product organization CPSC should encourage the sale of magnets instead of attempting to ban magnets from the U.S. market because some stupid parents who didn't read the 14+ warning on the package gave their 5 year old child magnets. Operation followed after swallowing some. Obviously the parents fault, not the company selling them...
