Every 18.6 years, our Moon reaches the extremes of its orbit around the Earth. We normally observe this as the Moon rises and sets at its most northerly and southerly positions on the horizon, but in the late hours of July 8, we will see the moon travel through the midpoint of its path across our sky. At 11:34 p.m., PDT, the moon will cast its light on our meridian arc illuminating the inscribed Major Standstill Southern Moon Transit markers that only see moonlight on these rare occasions.
