Amtrak crews, working in partnership with NJ TRANSIT, are making major progress on Portal North Bridge, a critical infrastructure project on the Northeast Corridor, the busiest passenger rail corridor in the United States.
This update highlights the complex work underway as crews install and align new track, upgrade overhead power systems, and prepare the rail network for the transition to the new bridge.
The cutover work is now more than 50 percent complete and advancing on schedule, marking an important milestone toward bringing the new bridge into service.
Portal North Bridge will replace the existing century-old bridge that requires trains to slow down and occasionally open for marine traffic. The new bridge is designed to improve reliability, reduce delays, and support smoother operations for the millions of passengers who travel between New Jersey and New York every year.
Through close coordination between Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT, this project will strengthen one of the most important rail connections in the country and help deliver more reliable service across the Northeast Corridor.
