Video from the vault! During the last several months of 2013, Penn Rail Videos wasn't able to get out trackside as much as we would've liked to. However, we managed to catch a lot of interesting train action in the Philadelphia region.
October 9th, 2013 - We set out with the mission of catching one of Amtrak's Heritage Units leading the Westbound Pennsylvanian out of Philadelphia. Mission success, as Amtrak P40DC #822 came around the bend at Downingtown, PA along Amtrak's Keystone Corridor. #822 is one of five GE locomotives to receive "heritage" paint schemes, paying tribute to Amtrak's 40th Anniversary. #822 wears the "Phase III" scheme, which is also worn by P42DC #145. This was the scheme that was common on Amtrak's EMD F40PH locomotives. After the "catch of day", we stuck around to see the eastbound Pennsylvanian roar out from underneath the impressive truss bridge that carried Pennsylvania Railroad's "Trenton Cut-off" to Morrisville, PA. First though, we would be greeted by a Keystone Service train led by an aging EMD AEM-7. These engines are soon to be replaced by brand new Siemens-built "ACS-64 Sprinter" locomotives. On the way home, we swung by the former Reading Railroad's mainline just west of the city in a small village known as Gladwyn. Here we will see the Abrams local heading west towards the yard. The second unit in the lash-up is a former Reading SW-1001.
November 16th, 2013 - Penn Rail Videos spent an afternoon trackside along the CSX Trenton Subdivision, where we caught a pair of crude oil trains. First, we catch a westbound K040 at West Trenton, NJ as is passes the old switch tower and former Reading Railroad station with a trio of BNSF power. Further west, we catch another oil train K048 with Canadian Pacific power leading through the railfan hot-spot in the area, Woodbourne.
November 25th, 2013 - Penn Rail Videos set out with the hopes of catching the NKP unit on the Z4X, we were instead greeted by a regular NS SD70ACe leading a similar train, Z4R. This is a loaded crude oil train bound for the refinery in Delaware City, DE. Port Deposit is just west of the North East Corridor, and this is where many trains will call Amtrak CTEC-3 for permission to head up to Newark via the NEC. Later in the day, we thought maybe we would be able to catch a CSX K097 with a BNSF/NS/NS lash-up. Well after sitting at Elsmere along the CSX Philadelphia Subdivison for a little while, we found out that the K097 was long gone after the morning. So all we mananged to catch was this train Q370.
December 3rd, 2013 - This was a great day to be in the Philadelphia area. We got wind that westbound NS crude oil train 65W would BNSF 673, still in Santa Fe "Warbonnet" paint, on the point. The old soldier has seen better days, and we're sure it will find its way to a paint booth on the BNSF system. Later in the day, we find ourselves in the city where we catch another oil train with another Santa Fe Warbonnet! However not in the lead, this still was a pretty neat catch. A little less faded than the 673, CSXT oil train K040 slowly makes its way past the University of Pennsylvania park, and the WXPN building on the right. We conclude with another oil train, CSXT K042 with a BNSF SD70MAC leading two other pumpkins past the former Baltimore & Ohio CPL signals at VINE Interlocking.
