Ticks are one of Maine's most notorious outdoor hazards, and scientists are working hard to understand them better.
Researchers at the UMaine Cooperative Extension Tick Lab are tracking the black-legged tick and its role in Maine's tick-borne disease landscape, studying pathogens like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The lab has built a passive tick surveillance program thanks to thousands of samples submitted by members of the public from across the state.
