The best boys and girls soccer players from the Western Maine Conference faced off against the best from the Southern Maine Activities Association in last week's 11th annual senior all-star games. The well-attended competition at Westbrook High's Olmsted Field helped raise funds for the Maine Special Olympics.
The SMAA boys defeated the WMC, 3-1, in the second game of the evening. Traip Academy coach Paul Marquis and Mike Lane of Sacopee Valley headed up the WMC squad.
The SMAA led 1-0 at the half and increased their advantage to 2-0 in the second half before York's Eric Masi scored the WMC's only goal of the game. Another late tally by the SMAA ended any hopes the WMC had of tying the contest.
"I think he was probably the best player out there," Marquis said about Masi. The former Wildcat is headed to Suffield Academy in Connecticut this fall.
Marquis added that Traip's Jamie Finneran played an all-around solid game and that Marshwood's Drew Colati and Wells' Matt Subilia, "played real well defensively for us."
The WMC boys have won five times, the SMAA now has three victories and the teams have tied on three occasions.
