Award-nominated documentary ‘Mai FM – It’s Cool to Kōrero’ shines a light on the rise of Mai FM. The station, founded in 1992 by Auckland iwi Ngāti Whātua, was built on hip hop, R’n’B and te reo Māori.
At the heart of those early days is original breakfast host Robert Rakete, who remembers a time when the station was little more than a CD player hooked up to an aerial, and the unlikely pressure of being a confessed technophobe whose job was to push all the right buttons 💿️
