In this video (compiling and re-editing material originally released in 4 shorts) Matthew King looks at Gustav Mahler from four angles: 1. The strange, controlling rituals of his daily routine, 2. Ehe great Vista-opening moment at the end of Das Lied von der Erde, 3. A discussion (during a British gale) about Mahler and the 'Great Man' problem, and 4. A musical conclusion: Matthew King plays part of the Chorus Mysticus from the 8th Symphony on the piano.
A big thank you to violinist Jack Callahan for his superb comment that inspired a section of this video.
The video includes 2 brief extracts from the first movement of Mahler's 6th symphony, the first with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado and the second with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. There is also a brief clip of Leonard Bernstein's famous performance of Mahler's 2nd Symphony ('Resurrection') with the L.S.O. and there are two clips from the recording of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Pierre Boulez.
