The Mahabodhi Temple ("Great Awakening Temple") is one of the four holy Buddhist sites, it is the place where Buddha attained enlightenment. The Mahabodhi Temple has been a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists for over two thousand years. The first temple was built by Emperor Asoka at the site of the Bodhi Tree after he made a pilgrimage to this place around 260 BC. The present temple dates from the 6th century. It is one of the earliest and most imposing structures built entirely in brick, still standing in India. The Mahabodhi Temple Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
