Magpie explores love and toxic masculinity through the simile of a magpie, a British bird fabled to collect shiny things. Like magpies with their aluminium foil and candy wrappers, many men take pride in going out with as many superficially attractive women as possible, furthering a culture of objectification and gender inequality. At the same time, Magpie examines the other side of the equation, recounting the tale in the second person as you fall prey to the charm of the Magpie and find the lack of reciprocity for your emotions unhealthily attractive. This kind of relationship is not only found in romantic contexts but can be applied to friendships and even certain aspects of business. I hope you like it!
