Shown here is a time lapse that I took of a strong iron boron neodymium magnet being absorbed by magnetic putty. The recording time was just under half of an hour and is played back at 80x speed. The magnetic putty is attempting to pull the iron boron magnet to the center of its gelatinous mass, where it will be as evenly coated with putty as possible.
Magnetic putty is a silicon polymer infused with millions of ferromagnetic particles, typically iron oxide powder. It looks and feels like regular silly putty, but when a magnetic field is applied the ferromagnetic particles will align and form a temporary magnet.
If the applied magnetic field is removed, the putty will retain it's magnetic properties until thermal agitation will eventually shake the particles and it will lose its magnetic alignment.
