The opulent Castillo Del Lago was designed by prominent American architect John DeLario in 1926. Its initial owners, oil explorer Patrick Longdon and his wife Georgianna, were drawn to its stunning views of Lake Hollywood. This 20-room house, spread over nine floors, was a remarkable engineering feat, costing $250,000 to complete. The Longdons enjoyed their time in this secluded and beautiful home until Mrs. Longdon's passing.
Gangster Bugsy Siegel later owned the estate, using it for his illicit activities. The house witnessed gambling and nightlife, leaving behind scars from flying bullets. Castillo Del Lago also faced vandalism and fire damage before it was restored by subsequent owners.
In 1993, Madonna purchased Castillo Del Lago for nearly $5 million. She lived there while filming the musical-historical film "Evita." Her brother, artist and interior decorator Christopher Ciccone, transformed the property with a bold color scheme of oxblood red and mustard paint. Madonna's time at Castillo Del Lago was marked by seclusion, but it was also a period of creative productivity. Unfortunately, safety concerns led her to sell the home to filmmaker Joe Pytka in 1996.
In 2010, fashion designer Leon Max purchased Castillo Del Lago for $7 million. He modernized the towers and retaining walls, replanted the hanging gardens, and maintained the home's historical charm. The property now features 300-degree views of the L.A. basin, downtown L.A., and the Pacific Ocean.
Castillo Del Lago's exterior boasts a terraced courtyard, lap pool, exotic fountains, and rose gardens. The fortress-like 10,500 square foot home offers unmatched privacy and views. Inside, the home features coffered 25-foot ceilings, terracotta floors, custom wrought iron features, colorful tilework, and Moorish arched doorways.
The estate includes nine unique bedrooms, six bathrooms, a wine cellar, media room, wood-paneled library, and a chef's kitchen with top-notch appliances. The grand primary suite wing features hardwood floors, sitting areas, French doors, and Moroccan tile designs.
