This is one of only two televised performances ever of “Drowned World". Recorded in Paris during the second leg of the Ray of Light promo tour for the French TV special Sacrées Femmes, and produced by Madonna's ex-lover from the "Patrick Hernandez days" Daniel Moyne, this show was heavily publicized at the time. Madonna, dressed in a stunning gothic gown by Olivier Theyskens, lip-synced the song while her musicians performed live, and even sang the last segment of the song fully live. However, the broadcast did not reflect this — the audio was fully replaced with the album version. Furthermore, numerous differences exist between the taping and the final broadcas : Many segments were cut, the live musicians were muted, and several of Madonna’s remarks during her long interview — including a cheeky joke about Céline Dion — were removed entirely. The show has never been rebroadcast, and only low-quality video recordings seem to have survived. Even Madonna’s official YouTube channel hosts the performance in particularly poor and unwatchable quality — though, admittedly, that’s about as surprising as rain being wet. To address this, the performance has been carefully restored to the best possible quality using current technology and is presented here in HD. Note : While the original broadcast featured lip-synced vocals and music, this file includes two audio options : A newly mixed live version with authentic live instrumentation and vocals, carefully mixed from 3 different performances of the song by Madonna and her musicians, and the original broadcast audio with the studio/album track for the purists.
