I finally got up the courage to tackle replacing the old Varta Lithium clock battery that's been ticking away inside this beige box for 30+ years.
I hear that I might be one of the lucky ones where it didn't self destruct-- leaking caustic juice all over the motherboard.
I grabbed a generic battery holder from Vetco in Bellevue and shaved off little sections of the plastic to make it fit better butted up against the nearby IC's.
All that's left now is troubleshooting of the scsi drive. hardware hardware hardware hardware hardwarwe $$$
