The M6 Mac mini is here, but is it actually worth upgrading from the M4 Mac mini? On the surface, these two machines look basically identical, but once you dig into the internals, Apple made some pretty significant changes.

In this video, I break down every major difference between the M6 and M4 Mac mini, including Apple’s move from a 3nm to 2nm process, the new 12 core CPU with Super Cores, improved GPU performance, Neural Accelerators, the dual 16 core Neural Engine, faster AI workloads, increased memory bandwidth, faster SSD performance, Wi Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, 2.5Gb Ethernet, Genlock over USB C, improved external display support, and more.

We also need to talk about the biggest catch: price. The M4 Mac mini originally launched for just $599, while the new M6 Mac mini starts at $899 with the same 16GB of unified memory and 256GB of storage. So is all of that extra performance really worth another $300?

For most current M4 Mac mini owners, I don’t think the upgrade is necessary unless you’re already pushing your machine with local LLMs, heavier GPU workloads, gaming, 3D rendering, or other demanding workflows. But if you’re coming from an M1 or M2 Mac mini, the M6 becomes a much more compelling upgrade.
