The M5Stack Paper Mono might be one of the most interesting ESP32 devices I’ve seen this year.
It’s a compact e-paper touchscreen device that packs a surprising number of features into a pocket-sized gadget. You get an 800×480 e-paper display with 4 levels of grayscale, a built-in backlight, a 1150 mAh battery, NFC, LoRa, and of course an ESP32 at its heart.

But what makes it really interesting to me is that it’s fully open source. You can reprogram it, build your own projects, or use firmware created by other makers.
In this video, I’m taking a first look at the M5Stack Paper Mono, testing the display and backlight, and showing you the firmware it comes with. Later in the video, I’ll also show you an e-book reader firmware and some of my own examples.
