Output of Xnor gate is 0 only when both inputs are different . Feeding both inputs of gate with the same clock gives a constant output of "1" . By touching unconnected terminal of capacitor , you "unbalance" the Xnor gate inputs and this produces negative-going pulses . Phase shift on that input makes the signal different .
