Rokolee DIYThis easy knitting tutorial is all about binding off (aka casting off), which is the process of removing the stitches from your needles and creating a neat, finished edge. It's the basic 'knit bind off' method I'm demonstrating today, which is the most popular and is the one I use to finish most of my knitting projects.
And I also add a note at the end to say that you can do the reverse of this technique, i.e. the 'purl bind off', simply by swapping the knit stitches for purl stitches.

Thanks very much! How to: Use Slip Stitches to Knit 2-Stitch Cables | C2B & C2F Cables Without a Cable NeedleRokolee DIY2024-05-26 | This knitting tutorial demonstrates how to knit C2F (1/1 Left Cross) and C2B (1/1 Right Cross) cables, which are created by passing one stitch over another. The result is a dainty cable that's only one stitch wide. There are a few methods to create these cables without having to use a cable needle every time, and people prefer to use these methods for small cables because they're quicker and more efficient.
The technique I'm showing today is the slip stitch method, which basically involves moving the stitches between the needles to reorient them, before then working them by knitting or purling (or both).

Thanks very much! How to Knit: the 2nd Stitch BEFORE the 1st Stitch | C2B & C2F 2-Stitch Cables Without a Cable NeedleRokolee DIY2024-05-20 | This knitting lesson shows you how to knit narrow C2F (1/1 LC) and C2B (1/1 RC) cables, which are created by passing one stitch over another. Using the method of working the second stitch before the first stitch allows you to avoid the use of a cable needle, which can be awkward and time consuming.
Note that the technique I show for making a C2F cable results in a twisted knit stitch being passed behind a regular knit stitch. This shouldn't be a problem because it's hidden from view, but if you really wanted to avoid having a twisted stitch you could instead take your right-hand needle into the front of the 2nd st to knit it (by going from the back, between the 1st and 2nd stitches), before then knitting the 1st stitch as you normally would.

Thanks very much! How to Knit: 2-Stitch Cables WITHOUT a Cable Needle | C2B, C2F, 1/1 LC, 1/1 RCRokolee DIY2024-05-11 | This knitting tutorial shows you how to knit C2F (1/1 Left Cross) and C2B (1/1 Right Cross) cables, which are created by passing one stitch over another. If the 1st stitch is passed in front, then the cable will travel to the left, and if the 1st stitch is passed behind, then the cable will travel to the right instead.
It's a simple concept because you just need to swap the position of 2 stitches before then working them. This method is definitely quicker and less fiddly that using a cable needle.

Thanks very much! How to Knit: C2F & C2B Cables using a Cable Needle | 2-Stitch Cable Knitting TutorialRokolee DIY2024-05-06 | This video lesson demonstrates how to knit C2F (1/1 Left Cross) and C2B (1/1 Right Cross) cables, which are made up of 2 stitches - which means that they are made by passing one stitch over the other stitch. If the 1st stitch is held at the front on the cable needle, then the cable will travel to the left, and if the 1st stitch is held at the back, then the cable will travel to the right instead.
Note that there are multiple ways of knitting this type of narrow cable, and I'll be showing you those in upcoming videos. Usually people prefer to not use a cable needle for such small cables because it's cumbersome and more time consuming. But the choice is up to you!
I hope you find this useful :)

Thanks very much! How to Knit: PSO, PSSO & P2SSO Stitches | Pass Stitch Over Knitting TutorialRokolee DIY2024-04-20 | This video lesson demonstrates the pso, psso and p2sso abbreviations you will regularly see in your knitting patterns. Pso just stands for Pass Stitch Over, and you'll likely already have carried out this action when binding off stitches. Psso stands for Pass Slip Stitch Over, and will often be combined with other stitches - notably as 'sl 1, k1, psso' or 'sl 1, k2tog, psso' - to create popular decrease techniques. You may see these also referred to as 'skpo' and 'sk2po' respectively. P2sso stands for Pass 2 Slip Stitches Over, and again is often combined with other stitches to create a decrease method i.e. 'sl 2, k1, p2sso', which is a centred double decrease that can also be abbreviated as 's2kpo'.
These terms are a common occurence in knitting so I thought I'd demonstrate popular uses for them.

It's a simple pattern that creates lots of texture.
In the video I compare fully- and half-twisted moss stitch, just so you can see the difference. For the half-twisted moss stitch, you only twist half the stitches, whilst with the fully-twisted moss stitch you twist every stitch, which leads to a reversible fabric.

Thanks very much! How to Knit: 2x2 Twisted Rib Stitch | Knit & Purl Through the Back Loop | Neat Ribbing PatternRokolee DIY2024-03-05 | This video demonstrates how to knit 2x2 twisted rib stitch, which isn't quite as stretchy/form-fitting as regular rib, but it's still quite stretchy and you may prefer the more compact, tighter appearance.
In order to twist a stitch, you need to knit or purl into the back of a stitch (k or p tbl), rather than into the front like you would do for a normal knit or purl stitch. Once you've mastered that, the pattern is easy! I'll demonstrate the difference you can create by twisting either some or all of the stitches - resulting in half- or full- twisted ribbing.

Thanks very much! How to Knit: 1x1 Twisted Rib Stitch | ktbl & ptbl Ribbing | Easy Knitting PatternRokolee DIY2024-02-26 | The 1x1 twisted rib stitch usually refers to a pattern where you only twist half the columns in the single ribbing pattern (which I call half twisted rib) - however, I'll also show you the effect when you twist every stitch in the entire pattern (which I call full twisted rib), just for comparison purposes.
In order to twist a knit or purl stitch, you simply work it 'through the back loop' (tbl), which means you take your right-hand needle into the back of the stitch rather than the front. This changes the orientation of the stitch on the needle, making it twisted and therefore a bit tighter. You may prefer the neater and more compact ribbed result.

Thanks very much! How to: Knit & Purl tbl | Twisted Stockinette & Garter Stitch | Knitting Through the Back LoopRokolee DIY2024-02-20 | This knitting tutorial will first show you how to knit & purl tbl (through the back loop) in order to twist the stitches. I'll then compare how twisted garter stitch compares to regular (untwisted) garter stitch, and how twisted stockinette stitch compares to regular stockinette stitch. And I'll end by only twisting the stitches on the right side of the knitting.
For reference, garter stitch is where you knit each stitch (k) on every row, and twisted garter stitch is where you knit each stitch through the back loop (k tbl) on every row. And stockinette stitch is where you alternate between a knit row and a purl row (row 1: k, row 2: p), and twisted stockinette stitch is the same but you twist every stitch (row 1: k tbl, row 2: p tbl).

Thanks very much! How to: Knit Through the Back Loop (ktbl) & Purl Through the Back Loop (ptbl) | Knitting TutorialRokolee DIY2024-02-17 | This quick lesson demonstrates knitting & purling through the back loop (tbl), which is where you take the right-hand needle into the back of the stitch rather than the front - and this creates a twisted stitch. A twisted stitch will be tighter and more compact than a regular (untwisted) stitch.
In the thumbnail, the first few ridges of garter stitch are untwisted; the next few are twisted. It clearly shows the difference in appearance.

Thanks very much! How to: Duplicate Stitch Colourwork | Add Stitches of a Different Colour | Swiss DarningRokolee DIY2024-01-24 | Duplicate stitch has a few different uses; it's a way to weave in ends quite invisibly on the back of stockinette stitch (or garter stitch), it's a way to fix mistakes in your knitting, and it's also a way to add decoration or a colourwork pattern to the front of stockinette stitch. Today I'll be demonstrating the latter by adding a design onto the front of my knitted swatch using a contrasting yarn. I'll finish the video by showing how I weave in the yarn ends, including how I use duplicate stitch to do so.
Note that duplicate stitch is an 'afterthought' method, in that it is only added after the knitting is completed.

Thanks very much! How to Knit: K2tog & K3tog Decreases | Knitting 2 Together or 3 Together | Tutorial for BeginnersRokolee DIY2023-11-13 | This lesson will show you how to knit 2 or 3 stitches together to reduce the number of stitches on your needles by 1 or 2, respectively. In other words, a k2tog is a single decrease, and a k3tog is a double decrease technique.
The k2tog is a very popular method that you will see a lot in knitting patterns, often paired with an ssk decrease. k2togs are right-leaning decreases (so appear to lean to the right when viewed on the front of your knitting), so are usually paired with left-leaning ssks to create a neater and more symmetrical appearance. I talk more about this in the video.
Note that k3togs would be paired with sssk decreases to create the best symmetry.

Thanks very much!Quick Recap: Knitting K2tog & K3tog Decreases | Easy Technique Lesson for BeginnersRokolee DIY2023-11-09 | This video tutorial will demonstrate how to knit 2 stitches together or 3 stitches together in one go, in order to reduce the overall number of stitches on your needles. The k2tog is a popular single decrease which reduces the stitch number by 1, and the k3tog is a less common double decrease so reduces the stitch number by 2. These are definitely vital knitting techniques for beginners to know :)
Note that these are both 'right-leaning' decreases, which means they appear to lean slightly to the right when you view them from the front of your knitting.

Thanks very much!Weaving In Ends - 3 Ways | Knitting Tutorial for Beginners | Garter & Stockinette StitchRokolee DIY2023-09-21 | This knitting lesson is all about how to 'weave in your ends' - or, in other words, secure your yarn tails once you've finished knitting. The first method I'll show you will be the invisible 'duplicate stitch' method of weaving in and I'll be doing that on garter stitch. Then the next 2 methods will be quicker but will have more visible results.
How exactly you weave in depends on what stitch you are weaving into the back of. I can't cover every eventuality so just remember that if you want to hide the yarn tail, try and follow the path of the yarn already in the knitting.

Thanks very much! How to: Bind Off in Pattern | Improved Edge for Ribbing | Knitting TutorialRokolee DIY2023-09-14 | This knitting lesson demonstrates binding off 'in pattern', which involves binding off whilst following the established pattern. You'll usually find this method used to create the bound-off edge on 1x1 or 2x2 ribbing, and that's what I show in this video. The advantage of binding off (aka casting off) 'in pattern' is that the resulting edge blends in so much better with the knitting. Otherwise, you'll likely be using the standard knit bind off technique or similar, which creates a uniform band along the edge.

In this video, I'll be demonstrating using the knit bind off method, and I'll use a garter stitch swatch for the 1st method and a stockinette stitch swatch for the 2nd method. It's just a simple way to improve the finishing of your knitting project and make it extra neat.

Thanks very much! How to: Bind Off without a Knot | Easy Knitting Tip | Standard Knit Bind OffRokolee DIY2023-09-02 | This quick knitting lesson shows you 2 versions of the standard knit bind off method; first, tying a knot at the end, and second, without tying a knot. The first way is the most common, but generally in knitting you want to try and avoid making any knots, so this is just a small tip to improve your knitting. It's extremely easy to do, so why not switch to this way? :)

Thanks very much! How to: Purl Stitch for Beginners | Easy Knitting Lesson | Stockinette Stitch PatternRokolee DIY2023-08-17 | This beginner knitting tutorial will show you how to do the purl stitch, which is one of the first techniques you'll need to learn. By combining the purl stitch with the knit stitch, you can create an endless variety of textures in your projects.
If you do only purl stitches on every row, you will create a knitted fabric called garter stitch, and if you alternate knit and purl rows (i.e. row 1) knit, row 2) purl, row 3) knit, row 4) purl etc.) you'll get a pattern that is called stockinette stitch - sometimes called stocking stitch. Stockinette stitch is the most common pattern you will see in knitting projects.

Thanks very much! How to: Count Rows of Knitting | Stockinette Stitch & Garter Stitch DemonstrationsRokolee DIY2023-05-16 | This tutorial shows you how to count the number of knitted rows in stockinette (and reverse stockinette) stitch, as well as garter stitch. I try to give you an idea how each of these patterns is constructed, as this will help a lot when counting the yarn loops.
In stockinette stitch, you just count the 'V' shapes (since the V is just the visible part of the yarn loops). One V = one row. In reverse stockinette, you will see wavy lines made up of 'n' and 'u' shapes. Each line of 'u's and 'n's is one row. In garter stitch, the easiest way to count the rows is to count the 'ridges'. Just like reverse stockinette, 'n' and 'u' shapes can be seen making up each ridge, however this time each ridge represents 2 rows (not 1). So count the ridges on the front and the back; if the number of ridges is the same on each side, times by 2 to get the number of rows. If it's not the same number of ridges on each side, the actual number of ridges is in between these 2 numbers. Multiply that by 2 to get the number of rows. Any mismatch in ridge numbers is because you've knitted an odd number of rows. One ridge = one row.
And each time, you don't also count the cast-on row, unless it is counted as the first row in your pattern.
