1. Aptera seems to be the closest to a production ready car. They are still looking for investors and have one prototype car. The claim is up to 40 miles per day in ideal conditions from solar power. It is a two seater and that is enough distance for most daily drivers. Read more here. ๐aptera.us
2. Several people seem to think we don't have this because its not profitable without selling the electricity as well. This feels more like conspiracy thinking rather than considering the real problem. Gasoline cars are sold and no car company expects to make money from the gasoline purchased later. So are thousands of other products like washing machines etc. Solar panels are sold at a profit for homes. AND, nearly every government actually gives you money back if you buy them in tax rebates. You can buy a solar panel at Walmart which is more evidence of just how much profit there is in just selling it once. All indications are that solar has value to sellers, to government and the consumer. A truly solar powered car could be sold for more than a regular car. There is no evidence someone would not make a car that they can sell at a profit, because they can't also sell you the electricity. That seems like a poor assumption. There is a strange pleasure in thinking you are aware of a conspiracy... like someone has something to keep from you and you caught them. But this claim doesn't match what we actually see in the market place, and business behavior.

๐FAQ ๐Can you capture the wind energy of the car at highway speeds with a windmill or air ducks etc?
The short answer is no. It will resist rotating just like the bicycle example from the video. The windmill acts like a brake resisting turning and slowing down the car. Remember you are "creating the wind" with your motor. Itโs not free. If you add a windmill or scoop or "x", it will produce more drag and slow the car. you need more power from the motor to keep your speed. The power needed to spin the windmill will be slightly more than the electrical power created by turning it. You have to use more energy than you can make like putting $50 in a machine to get $28 back. Nothing else... Just less money.

The Boeing 737-800 main wheels (the 4 rear wheels) are actually 44 inches making them just barely larger than the tractor trailer tire. Despite my research and having a second engineer fact check the video we both managed to miss this fact because the nose wheel diameter is 27" and mentioned in more places. The overall story is the same. The capacity of the airplane tire is many times greater than a truck... including the 27" nose wheel, but it was definitely worth mentioning that not ALL of the tires are 27".What Happens When You Add an Alternator to an Electric Car? You have to use more energy than you can make like paying $50 to get $28. ๐Why not add solar panels to the roof, hood etc to use the suns energy?
A solar panel would give you "some" energy. But it would also make the car more expensive and heavier. In fact many car companies have tried this and went bankrupt because it cost so much for so little return. Check out this video. youtu.be/FXDWRhEOX7k?si=hNIUzrQjkCCOBwPz It still has to pass a crash test for road worthiness, and buyers may not be willing to pay 3 times as much for a car that only get 1% more miles. I made those numbers up only to illustrate the point. "Current" solar panels don't produce enough energy per sqft to offset the difficulty and cost of adding them to cars. Not yet. It is great for a house because the surface area is huge and houses don't move. Cars park in garages, under trees, and/or may be behind a building or even a big truck in the parking lot all day getting no sun. Millions of engineers are thinking about this problem. No one has given up on making better systems. We are all looking for 5-10% more efficiency that doesn't raise the overall cost too much. Its just the problem is more complicated than this.
๐What if you add a second battery charging one as you drive on the other then switch. If you re-watch the segment where I use the cups to show the flow of power, you will see an example of why this doesn't work. You are literally just charging one battery with the other when the process is boiled down to where the energy went. To simplify, it flows from battery #1 to motor, then motor to wheels, then wheels to alternator, then alternator to battery two. The problem is each mechanism is wasting some power, and because the second battery is a load just like the alternator, you are also running the first battery down faster by some amount that is greater than the energy that goes into battery two. The important thing is the power out of battery one is more than the power needed to just drive the car. It is driving power +charging power! You will get more mileage without this system, and that is why no one uses it. This is very easy to test with a remote control car, an extra DC motor to act as a generator, batteries and a multimeter at home.
๐What if you attach an alternator directly to the wheel instead of the motor? This concept is addressed several times in the video. Perhaps you skipped around or didn't understand. Watching again should help. Short answer. This is exactly the same problem. Attached to the wheel IS attached to the motor. Even if you disconnect the motor after getting up to speed (because you just want to capture the kinetic "motion" of the car) the alternator acts like a brake quickly slowing the car down. In fact that is what regenerative braking is. The motor acts like an alternator slowing the car down and charging the battery a little. This is covered in the video. Cars already do this (regenerative braking), so adding an alternator doesn't add any benefit. It's just another part that can fail and increases the weight of the car.

Why do I want to learn Chinese? Well its a story with some history that developed over two years, so I can't really explain it here. But, Chinese is not the only language I plan to learn... and
The very short version of the story is I want to know/understand the culture, the people, the food, and be able to speak with them about these things in their language. I will probably visit the country one day as well, but that is not really the end goal. The end goal is understanding and creating friends from another place. Interestingly, the US state department ranked Chinese as one of the hardest languages for English speakers to learn. I didn't know that when I picked it... but it is consistent with what I said in the video, so I find that amusing. LOL

โCan you capture the wind energy of the car at highway speeds with a windmill or air ducks etc?
The short answer is no. Exactly like the alternator, the windmill acts like a brake resisting turning and slowing down the car. If you add a windmill or scoop or "x" to the car, it will produce more drag and slow the car just like a brake would. The mechanical power needed to spin the windmill will be slightly more than the electrical power created to turn the windmill. The car has to supply the extra mechanical power to keep the car in motion. You will waste more power than you gain back.
โWhy not add solar panels to the roof, hood etc to use the suns energy?
It would increase the weight of the car, and GREATLY increase the cost of the car, for very little charge. Solar panels are not very efficient compared to their weight. So it a nice idea for a big stationary object like a house, but not so much for something that has to use power to move them all over town. Parking in the shade or in a garage lowers their benefit as well. I personally don't think people would pay the difference in cost for this very small benefit. In fact, the weight might completely waste the added charge by using more power when you drive. As their weight reduces and efficiency improves this might change in the future. There are car companies that have reduced the weight of the car and made very large panels such that the car gets a lot of power from solar, but those few car options cost over $100k. This might change in the future.
