Things like proper drainage, a solid base material, and making sure you dig deep enough so the retaining wall doesn't fall over.Most people skip critical steps, like digging deep enough for a 6" packed gravel base - which is critical for the structural integrity of your wall. Or, even worse, they don't install a gravel base at all.You'll also learn the importance of using 3/4" gravel behind your retaining wall blocks so excess moisture doesn't build up behind the wall and potentially cause it to fall over. Then, I'll demonstrate how wide to dig the trench before building your wall, and what to consider when planning that out. In this video, I built a curved wall with a cool step feature.Then, we'll go right into building it, starting with the first row of blocks., which you'll need to make sure are perfectly level. You can use this process to build a retaining wall-raised garden bed or just for garden bed edging even when not retaining soil. You can build this wall up to three feet tall. First, you start off with a four-inch layer of packed gravel for a base. Make sure that it is perfectly level because that is the foundation of your garden wall. Then, begin laying the blocks on the first row and leveling each as you go. This is a time-consuming process, but it's important so slow. Once the first layer of concrete stone blocks is installed, the rest of the project is easy. Add the second layer, making sure to stagger the seams. Once you have the second layer fit, remove it and apply construction adhesive to secure the blocks together.Then, repeat this process for as high as you want. Installing a level string tied between two stakes is a great way to help you dig to the appropriate depth, maintain a straight wall, and guide other aspects of the project. In this video, I demonstrate "The Popsicle Stick Trick" for getting perfect inside corners with a mitered joint. This will both save time and make your baseboard project easier. The first step is to cut your baseboard inside corners at an angle of 44 degrees with a miter saw to compensate for the drywall mud buildup. Cut them just a hair shorter than the distance between the walls to avoid having to make multiple cuts. Then, check to see if there is a gap in your mitered joint. If so, then this is where the popsicle stick trick works its magic. Once you purchase your baseboards, the first step is to paint them. Let the paint dry, and you are ready to cut them with a miter saw and install them with a brad nailer by nailing them to the wall. Then, caulk, paint, and enjoy your new baseboards. In this video, I use MDF baseboards, but you can also buy wood baseboards. MDF is easier to work with. It's easier to cut, and it's more consistent (no warping). Then, mount part of the wall mount bracket to the TV using the right screws for your TV. Your mount will come with lots of screws, most of which you won't use. Find the ones that work and throw the rest away.Then, connect the other part of the mount to the TV as well and measure from the bottom of the TV to the top screw hole on the part of the bracket that attaches to the wall. Write this dimension down so you can use it later.Next, use a tape measure and a level to figure out the center of the TV side to side and where you want the bottom of the TV to sit on the wall. Use the measurement from earlier to figure out how high to screw in the lag screws. Honestly, you should watch the video for this part.Now, locate the studs and mark them with a pencil. Then translate the marks you made for the height of the screws across the studs and pre-drill into the studs using a 3/16" or 7/32" drill bit. Make sure to drill into the center of the studs and make sure your mount will work with your screw locations. However, not all grout needs to be sealed. If you have epoxy grout, you should not seal it because it won't accept a sealer anyway. How can you tell if you have epoxy grout? Easy, does it look and/or feel like plastic? If so, then it is epoxy grout.Next, I talk about how which sealers are best to use and why. Basically, any high-quality penetrating sealer with fluorochemicals is best. That way there are different sized particles that can fill in the gaps on the grout. How To Mix Thinset - Essential tips for small batches Handyman Startup 2019-07-14 | Learn everything you need to know about how to mix a perfect batch of thinset tile mortar on the first try. Learn how to mix thinset in small batches and how much thinset to mix.The challenging thing about mixing thinset is that as a DIYer you rarely want to mix an entire bag at a time, and since the directions on the back of the bag of thinset usually only give you the ratios of water to thinset for the entire bag, it can be difficult to get the right consistency.In this video I'll show you two ways to get the right consistency of thinset - which is very similar to peanut butter.Mixing thinset is actually very straight forward and can be done in several steps: 1. Add the water to the bucket first - You'll want to use about a quart of water to start with for your first time mixing thinset.2. Next, slowly add in thinset and mix until you reach the desired consistency. You want it thick enough to hold a notch, but thin enough so that it actually sticks to the wall. If it's too thick, it won't want to stick to the wall. If it's too thin it will just run all over the place.3. Once you've reached the desired consistency, continue mixing for 3-5 minutes4. After the initial mixing period, just let it sit to slake for ten minutes. This allows the water to mix with the chemicals in the thin set and starts the chemical reaction.5. Once the slaking period is over, it's time to mix again for a couple of minutes. For the mixing times, you'll want to follow what it says on the bag of thinset that you have since they are all different. Never add more water after the slaking period, otherwise, you will compromise the integrity of the thinset and potentially make it weaker. One way to ensure you get a perfect mix is to do some math and calculate the exact ratio of water to thinset. In my example, I had a 50-pound bag of Schluter All-Set Thinset Mortar - which is a modified Thinset. It says to mix 5.5-6.5 quarts of water for the entire bag. So, if I simply do some math and divide 50 by 5.5, and then 50 by 6.5, then I learn that I need about 8 to 9 pounds of thinset per quart of water. You'll get to see the entire process including digging down, tamping the dirt, laying down the gravel base, leveling the layer of decomposed granite, placing the flagstones, cutting the flagstones, and finally leveling the flagstones. I've already done a video explaining exactly how to build this step by step, so be sure to watch that. However, I think this will give you a really good idea of what the process actually looks like.This project took me about twenty hours to complete from start to finish. I completed it over a period of seven days working anywhere from 1.5hrs to 4hrs each day. There's a lot of digging and it is back breaking work so I wouldn't recommend doing this for 8 hours a day unless you are used to this type of work already (for example if you install floors for a living.) I think I could have finished this a bit faster, but I had to dig around a lot of roots from a nearby tree and avoid damaging a sprinkler line in the process. I also had to repair the sprinkler line.

How to Install Marble or Granite Countertops in a Bathroom Handyman Startup 2018-04-11 | In this video, you'll learn how to install pre-fabricated marble or granite countertops in your bathroom using basic tools you probably already have at home.You'll learn how to measure for marble countertops. How to cut stone countertops using a circular saw and a diamond blade. And, how to glue the marble or granite to the cabinets.First, you start out by removing the existing countertops and leveling the cabinets to prepare for the marble.Once the cabinets are flat and level, measure them carefully and use those measurements to cut out a wood template from 5/8" plywood. This wood template should extend from the wall to the edge of the countertop and will act as both a template and a support for the final installation of the stone countertop.Use the template to mark the marble or granite for cutting. Then, using a circular saw and a 7" turbo diamond blade, cut the stone slowly. You'll also want to cutout the sink hole before you install the countertops.Now your'e ready to install! First, screw down the 5/8" plywood to the top of the countertops using 1 5/8" screws. Be sure to pre-drill near the front of the cabinets so you don't split the wood. Then, Dry fit the marble to make sure it fits. If it does fit, remove it, apply a generous amount of silicone to the plywood, and then set the stone countertops back down. The Silicone will act as an adhesive and as a cushion to ensure contact with the entire surface.The, caulk the edges with a color matched caulking (usually you can find this in the tile section of a store). Add a backsplash, install the sink, and you're all set!

In this video, you'll learn how to repair a broken wood fence post WITHOUT having to dig up any concrete or having to replace the existing fence post.I'll show you how to use an EZ-Mender metal fence repair bracket to easily fix the fence in less than 30 minutes from start to finish.This repair would typically be done on a backyard wooden privacy fence, usually constructed from Redwood or Cedar. This is a common repair, because the wood fence posts tend to rot at the base of the fence where they sit in the concrete footing. Once the fence post is rotted, it will blow over easily in the wind. Ideally you'll notice your fence post is broken before the fence blows over, and you can tell if it's broken if it is wobbling. This repair can be completed by any DIYer with common hand tools including:Sledge hammer3lb sledge hammerFramers hammerCordless Drill/Screw GunWood SawFirst, you want to remove the fence boards around the post. Then, detach the rails of the fence from the post. Next, hammer the EZ mender directly into the concrete footing and attach the post with screws. Re-assemble the fence and you're all set!

The Fastest and Easiest Way to Remove a Fence Post (that works every time) Handyman Startup 2017-06-14 | In this video, you'll learn the best way to remove a fence post and the concrete footing. This is the fastest, easiest fence post removal method that works every time, with no expensive tools, and very little digging.This will even work when the fence post has rotted off at the base.The secret to pulling a fence post, even if it's in hard packed or rocky soil, is to use a hi-lift jack and a steel chain. First, wrap the steel chain around the concrete footing. You may have to dig a few inches down, but not far.Then, hook the chain to the high lift jack and start jacking it up. How to Install A Replacement Window On A House With Wood Siding Handyman Startup 2016-12-24 | Learn how to replace an aluminum window with a brand new Milgard vinyl window with a nailing fin. This is an install that was completed on a house with wood sheet siding. In this video, you'll learn how to replace the window without taking the siding off. You'll also learn how to using the flashing tape and z-bar flashing to create a water-tight seal and keep moisture from penetrating into the home.First, we start out measuring the window, so me make sure to order the right size. Then, we'll remove the trim and cut the siding back so we can remove the old aluminum window. Once we've removed the window, we'll make sure the bottom of the rough opening is level, and install our first piece of flashing tape.Then, we can put the window in. You'll notice the new window has a nailing fin. How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets Like a Pro Handyman Startup 2015-05-20 | In this video, I walk you through the process of painting kitchen cabinets step by step. You'll get to see the entire process I used to paint my old oak cabinets white as well as learn the easiest way to get a professional finished product.Painting your kitchen cabinets is a lot of work and will usually take 3 or 4 days to complete. If you want to end up with a quality finished product, don’t skip steps!Before you can tackle this project, it’s important to choose the correct paint for the job. There are many different options available, but I recommend Benjamin-Moore Aura Semi-Gloss paint. It’s a high quality paint with great coverage. It’s mildew resistant, stains wash off easily, it’s long lasting, zero VOC, and it’s easy to cleanup. Whether you choose to use this paint or not, be sure to use a high quality paint!Painting your cabinets is very cheap when it comes to materials, but expensive when it comes to time and labor. You aren’t going to want to do this twice! Once you’ve got the paint, it’s time to prep the cabinets. You can’t just start painting them right away. First, you’ll need to wipe them down with a degreaser or mineral spirits. Then, fill in any scratches, nicks, or dents with wood filler. Caulk any gaps in the cabinets. Then, you are ready for the most time consuming part of the project: sanding. Sand all surfaces of the cabinets using 180 grit sandpaper. I would NOT recommend painting your cabinets without sanding as the paint will peel and you’ll end up with more of a mess than you started with.Once you’ve sanded and cleaned off the dust, it’s time to paint! In order to get a durable finish that lasts, you’ll want to do once coat of primer and two coats of paint.Start by priming the doors and drawer fronts. I recommend using a paint sprayer if you have one, but you can also use a high quality smooth finish roller and a high quality paint brush for this job. It will just take much longer. In between coats on the drawers, work on priming and painting the interior cabinet boxes. Be sure to tape off areas around and inside the cabinets you don’t want to get paint on. You can spray the cabinet boxes as well, but that is a huge pain and it creates a lot of garbage. So, I actually recommend using a roller and a brush for this as it takes much less time than the cabinet doors and drawers do. It also requires less prep and will save you some cash. Once you’ve done 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of paint, let the paint dry for about a day and then put the hardware back on! You’ve successfully painted your cabinets and are ready to enjoy a brand new and amazing kitchen.
