A new program called Classroom to the Streets, run by the nonprofit Beyond Walls, has helped turn the city of Lynn into a top public art destination in Massachusetts. Today, about 100 murals can be seen throughout the city.
“There isn’t anywhere else in Massachusetts that I think even comes to mind as the same scale,” said Lynn Arts and Culture Planner Marysa Angelli.
The nonprofit offers weekend walking tours to explore the murals and also brings art and tours to other cities, including Haverhill, Holyoke and Fall River.
Classroom to the Streets started last year after organizers noticed that young people enjoyed the mural tours. Now, the program includes artwork ideas from teenagers and teachers at Lynn Public Schools and St. Mary’s High School.
This excitement about public art is especially important in Lynn and other Gateway Cities. These smaller Massachusetts cities have spent years trying to revitalize their downtowns after decades of disinvestment, and public art is helping with that effort.
