Lupins may still be a relatively unfamiliar crop on the Canadian Prairies, but Lupin Platform Inc. is working to build both the acres and the infrastructure needed to change that.

The company has officially opened its first lupin processing plant in Westlock County, Alta., marking another step in what CEO Tristan Choi describes as building a Canadian lupin ecosystem that stretches from seed supply through production and processing to end users.

The new facility is currently capable of processing about one tonne of lupins per hour, dehulling the crop and turning it into meal. Choi says the company plans to increase that capacity to three to four tonnes per hour within the next four to six months.

“We have grown 800 acres. In 2026, we are looking to double or triple that in 2027. As the acreage grows, as the product gets more produced, the processing plant here should be able to process 100% of that,” he says.

The company sees opportunities for lupins in both animal feed and human food, driven largely by the crop’s protein and fibre content.

For growers, however, establishing a relatively new crop comes with challenges. Choi says lupin-specific inoculation and nodulation are still developing in soils with little history of the crop, while limited registered chemistry has also created hurdles.

Yield potential is another area still developing as experience with the crop grows.

“Yield-wise, it's not quite there yet compared to pea that's grown over 40, 50 years. So we are getting there,” Choi says.

Lupin Platform has been working with scientists to develop a Best Management Practice Manual for growers interested in adding lupins to their rotations.
