What it means in simple words: Imagine you have a drawing on a piece of white paper, and you want to place that drawing over a video without the white background. A Luma Key looks at the brightness (luminance) of an image and removes either the brightest parts (whites) or the darkest parts (blacks) to make them see-through.

Real-World Example: You download a stock video of a dramatic explosion or campfire, but it has a pure black background. Instead of manually cutting it out frame by frame, you use a Luma Key to instantly wipe away the black background, leaving just the bright fire to place over your scene.

Where to find it in After Effects:

Go to the top menu: Effect - Keying - Linear Color Key (or use the Effects & Presets panel and search for "Extract" / "Linear Color Key").
