Loy Kratong Festival: On the full moon evening of the twelth month of the Thai lunar calendar (Nov 27, 2023), our family came together to celebrate the Thai tradition of making floats (kratong) from slices of banana tree stems and decorating them with folded banana tree leaves. The floats are adorned with flowers, a candle and incense, which is lit before flotaing the kratong on a body of water such as a lake or canal or even the sea to pay respects to the water godess. The ceremony is symbolic of letting go of the past, allowing worries and troubles to be washed away to make a fresh start. "Loy" means 'to float'. "Kratong" is the decorated banana tree stem.
After making our kratongs, we went to a local lake to send our ktatongs on their way with a prayer.
