This comparison and testing video probably won’t be interesting to anyone but myself (lol), so skip if ya like. Most videos I’ve seen for low light testing are more for some cool night street photography or some controlled studio ones, but I need something more for my style of filming of the dark night sky. I do push the extremes and bring night to day, but that’s the look I’m after. It’s not for everyone of course.
Since the previous night there were flashing glitches on the new Canon Ra while filming for over an hour, I wanted to do a long night test again to see if it would happen again. No glitches were seen, though I’m still wary and need to test more. An hour’s worth of video is sped up 800% down to 5 minutes at the beginning.
Also, at 5:35 there is a comparison of low light noise between the Canon Ra and Canon R cameras on the dark night sky. The only light source is pretty much nothing but the stars and planets. The Ra was clearly better with less noise than the R. Some settings were the same but did change up to try and equal the brightness. A slight color grade is at 9:39.
8:43pm to 10:05pm, Sunday, August 23, 2020, NE Ohio (USA), SW Sky, 78°F (26°C)
Filmed with the Canon Ra Astro Camera & Canon 50mm F/1.4 USM Lens
And the Canon R Camera & Tamron 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Lens
Recorded onto the Atomos Ninja Flame & V, 5” & 7” Monitor/Recorders
Everything put together in Final Cut Pro X
