Loveland Pass Colorado: Extreme Altitude Scenic Drive in the Rocky Mountains @AdventureEveryDay

We start our drive on Loveland Pass in Colorado, heading west from I-70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel. The air is sharp and cold up here, with the Continental Divide’s big peaks rising all around us. The road climbs through tight switchbacks and long curves until we reach the summit at 11,990 feet, nothing but rocky alpine slopes and patches of snow on both sides.

Heading down toward Silverthorne, the pavement drops into the wide Blue River Valley, with more mountains in the distance and a couple of small towns tucked along the way. Then we turn around and head back east from Silverthorne. This side hugs steep cliffs and gives wide-open views of Dillon Reservoir sparkling below.

Once we crest the pass again, the road drops back down toward I-70, showing off the Arapaho Basin and the rough entrance to the tunnel from a whole different angle. It’s a solid loop through Colorado’s high country. Loveland Pass is the highest paved road in the state that stays open all year.

We begin heading westbound, and as we leave St. Mary. Montana the road threads through dense subalpine forest accented with early fall colors and opens onto sweeping views of St. Mary Lake, then ascends narrow switchbacks with dramatic drop-offs revealing distant hanging glaciers and sheer cliffs. After the alpine climb and dramatic high-country vistas, Going to the Sun Road begins a gentler descent where pavement winds down toward McDonald Creek and Lake McDonald. The road hugs the creek’s corridor, dropping into a quieter, forested valley before ending in the town of West Glacier, Montana. In West Glacier we turn around and make the complete drive on Going to the Sun eastbound back to St. Mary, Montana through the park, enjoying a different perspective of this incredible road. We start in Ivins near St. George in southwest Utah and drive north on Snow Canyon Drive, making frequent stops at scenic pullouts and viewpoints along the way, including Jenny’s Slot Canyon. The drive continues to the Snow Canyon Scenic Overlook where we soak in an incredibly beautiful desert sunset over the red rocks and canyons. As we continue we drive southbound back through the park to Ivins, well the route and scenery from the opposite direction. Snow Canyon State Park has the kind of dramatic awe-inspiring landscapes that would make it a national park in just about any other state.
