"Jesus is identifying with the poor, with the hungry, with the imprisoned.
Jesus is taking the older imperative to care for the poor as a way to remember your liberation from Egypt and now he’s saying – caring for the poor is akin to caring for me.
The Almighty is identifying not with the well off, well heeled, and wealthy, but with the poor, the destitute, the foreigner.
Jesus is saying:
You want to show me your love for me, you want to show me faithfulness, demonstrate it in your love for those who glean from the margins of the fields picking over what was left over, love those who governments throw in jail, love those who are having a hard time making ends meet, love those who don’t speak your language real well.
Love those who are sick – whose bodies don’t work the ways yours does, love those being ground down by world infatuated with youth, and beauty, and wealth, and privilege. Love the poor – because that’s who I’m identifying with."
