An affordability crisis is happening in our country, that is forcing people to make impossible choices. We recognize the reality that animal guardianship does carry a financial responsibility but when times are tough we need options to support keeping our pets with us, where they belong. Humane Canada is working to keep families together and to maintain the human animal bond so that all our companions have access to:
Affordable and Accessible Food: Our National Pet Food Bank has awarded thousands of dollars in funding to communities across Canada. By supporting these organizations, we are helping to establish more pet food banks in our country, ensuring that companion animals receive nutritious meals even when their families face hardship.
Pet-Inclusive Housing: Humane Canada is working to promote policies that encourage pet-friendly housing solutions, making it easier for families to keep their beloved animals regardless of economic circumstance.
Fostering Connections Between Shelters Across Canada: As the national federation of SPCAs and humane societies, together with our member shelters, we are addressing some of the most critical issues; shelter overcrowding and increase in surrenders due to high costs of pet care, including veterinary care, removing barriers to adoption, fostering, and more.
These initiatives are the heart of Humane Canada's mission; to foster love without limits, so that every member of the family, human or animal, has access to care, food and housing. Because these issues are not just affecting us, they are affecting our pets too.

“You start off with big plans, big ideas, but then on the ground, you’re just jumping from emergency to emergency, and it is hard to get past the crisis level […] I spend a lot of my time trying to get through the day-to-day things.” – An animal service worker in a confidential interview.
If you work in the animal service sector, the experience described above may sound familiar to you. Compassion fatigue, burnout, and the feeling of working in a constant state of reaction are all incredibly common in the sector.
If your organization is seeking to interrupt this cycle to reduce burnout and increase resilience, we have some exciting news for you!
The Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) recently launched a face-to-face version of their free online training program, which is designed to help organizations implement a trauma-informed, culturally safe approach and create safer, happier outcomes for animals, their guardians, and animal protection workers.
This free, workshop-style training can be arranged virtually or in-person for any animal service organization interested in learning how to implement trauma-informed and culturally safe approaches in their work, and how to mitigate the effects of burnout and compassion fatigue.
Engaging in this training workshop as a team can encourage:
• Group collaboration and discussion
• Brainstorming creative solutions
• Team-building and support
Workers or organizations can also access the self-paced online training here. The three complementary courses include videos, graphics, worksheets, reflection activities, interactive questions, and quizzes, all intended to help you and your team brainstorm creative ways to shift policies and practices. Each two-hour course can be taken in conjunction with the rest of the program or separately to learn about:
- Implementing a Culturally Safe & Trauma-Informed Approach
- Trauma-Informed & Culturally Safe Leadership
- Caring For Yourself & Others: Preventing Compassion Fatigue & Burnout
More than 330 people from seven provinces have enrolled so far, with very positive feedback!
“I did all the course modules (once I started I couldn’t stop!) … I believe these are incredibly well done, relevant, useful modules and any organization would benefit from them,” said one animal service worker.
