Watch and wait for the One who gives us a model of how we should LOVE one another.
Like God’s people in the Hebrew Bible and with the first disciples of Christ, it’s LOVE that motivates us to be similarly loving in all the connections we have with those around us.
LOVE is one of those words that’s all-encompassing. It speaks of what we’re fond of and what we can’t live without. It’s both sentimental and implies self-sacrifice. It identifies what should underscore our relationships with both God and neighbour. It’s about balancing one’s own interests with the interests of others.
As it says in Romans 12, “Don’t just pretend to LOVE others. Really LOVE them…LOVE each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honouring each other.”
Christmas allows us to recentre our attention on the main characteristic that describes God and that should define God’s people; namely, LOVE. For followers of Christ, it’s LOVE – as expressed through the example and teachings of Jesus – that is able to give us hope, to bring about peace, and to fill us with joy. When LOVE is our guiding principle – when we prioritize things like justice, mercy, humility, patience and kindness – the world as we know it can change for the better.
Let us LOVE in the same way that God has loved. And so, we watch and wait for the One who gives us a model of how we should LOVE one another.
