The Lotus Esprit is coming back, and its return could deliver more than 1,000 horsepower from a V8 hybrid powertrain. Lotus is developing the Type 135 as a lightweight mid-engine supercar that brings combustion power back into the company's future.
Expected to arrive in 2028, the Lotus Type 135 is being positioned between the Emira and Lotus's extreme electric performance models. The biggest news is the planned V8 hybrid version, which is targeting more than 1,000 horsepower while keeping curb weight around 1.5 tons, or approximately 3,307 pounds.
Weight will be critical to making that happen. Lotus is looking toward Formula 1-inspired electric motor technology designed to deliver serious power without the massive weight penalty normally associated with electrification. A V6 version is also planned, giving the reborn Esprit another combustion-based option.
The Type 135 also signals an important change in Lotus strategy. Instead of moving toward an exclusively electric lineup, Lotus now plans to combine combustion engines, plug-in hybrid technology, and fully electric vehicles.
