Join us in-person at the Herbst Theater this year for a special one night showing of a new Lost Landscapes film by Rick Prelinger! Long Now Members and supporters of the Prelinger Library will get early access to tickets, which will be released the first week of November.
Prelinger Library Patron Tickets include reserve seating in the front rows of the theater. 100% of the funds raised via Patron Tickets goes directly to support the Prelinger Library, San Francisco's famed experimental research library that supports artists, historians, community members, and researchers of all kinds.
This year LOST LANDSCAPES radiates out from San Francisco, extending its archival gaze to the infrastructures, people and landscapes of California north, south, east and west. Made from newly rediscovered images of San Francisco, cities and towns, and places throughout California where nature and culture meet, 02021's all-new show fixes on the history of our state's resources and the backbones that have made it work: transportation, extraction, communication, travel and labor.
California's many peoples, communities and histories all intersect in a panoramic poem documenting the past and suggesting possible futures in an age of climate and seismic uncertainty. As with all LOST LANDSCAPES events, the audience makes the soundtrack, and you are cordially invited to identify people, places and events, pose questions to one another and to the host, and engage in spirited conversation as the film plays.
Rick Prelinger is the founder of the Prelinger Archives in San Francisco, whose moving image holdings may be found online at www.archive.org. With Megan Prelinger, he co-founded Prelinger Library (www.prelingerlibrary.org), a publicly-available collection of historical periodicals, books, print ephemera, maps and government documents.
"LOST LANDSCAPES 02021 Earth, Fire, Air, Water: California Infrastructures" was given on December 1, 02021 as part of Long Now's Seminar series. The series was started in 02003 to build a compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking from some of the world's leading thinkers.
