British photographer Lee Jeffries started taking photos while at sporting events in Manchester, but his artistic approach completely changed when he met a young homeless girl by chance in London. At first, he had photographed the girl from a distance as she huddled in a sleeping bag, but when she noticed him, he was drawn to talk with her. After that conversation, his perception of the homeless was transformed. They became the focus of his art. He has since met and photographed numerous people who live on the streets, both in Europe and the United States. "Situations arose, and I made an effort to learn to get to know each of the subjects before asking their permission to do their portrait," he says. His impressive photos capture the rugged life of his models while still respecting their dignity.
