The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

The Watcher in the Water, also called the dweller in the water or Dweller in the Pool, was a mysterious "water-monster" that lurked in a dark stagnant pool or lake beneath the western Walls of Moria, which was created by the damming of the Sirannon river. The water had gradually grown deeper and crept closer to the West-gate of Moria, leaving only a narrow walkway where once the Elven-way allowed traffic between Ost-in-Edhil and Khazad-dûm many years before in the Second Age. The full shape of the creature was unknown, but its visible parts were its many tentacles, which were long, sinuous, pale-green, gray, and luminous, with fingered ends. The Watcher in the Water gave off "a hideous stench" that was said to make the lake boil.
