Step into the ethereal world of Loom, a landmark title from the golden age of Lucasfilm Games. Released in 1990, Loom remains one of the most poetic and artistically distinct adventures ever created.
This video provides the Full Story, combining every cinematic cutscene with key gameplay moments to give you the complete narrative experience of Bobbin Threadbare’s journey.
What truly sets Loom apart from its contemporaries like The Secret of Monkey Island or Indiana Jones is its revolutionary interface. In a bold departure from the traditional "Verb-and-Noun" system, Loom features "Musical Drafts": There are no text-based commands or inventory icons. Instead, you interact with the world through music. By playing sequences of four musical notes on your Weaver's "Distaff", you cast spells—or "Drafts"—to manipulate the environment.
Audio-Visual Mastery: The game’s puzzles require a keen ear and a sharp mind, making the soundtrack (inspired by Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake) an integral part of the mechanics rather than just background noise.
The Story of Bobbin Threadbare: On his 17th birthday, young Bobbin Threadbare, a member of the Guild of Weavers, finds himself alone after his elders are transformed into swans. To save his people and the very fabric of reality, Bobbin must travel across the lands of the Great Guilds—the Glassmakers, the Shepherds, and the Blacksmiths—to stop a terrifying power from tearing the Pattern apart.
Designer Brian Moriarty (known for Infocom and Trinity) planned a fantasy trilogy set in a mystical world where different guilds (weavers, blacksmiths, glassblowers, etc.) use magic in their own unique ways. Loom was to be the first part of this series, showing the perspective of the weavers' guild. The following were planned: Part 2: “Forge” – from the perspective of the blacksmith guild; Part 3: “The Fold” – conclusion of the story, possibly from the perspective of a third guild.
However, these games were never realized because Moriarty left LucasArts shortly after Loom. After that, no one at the studio had the interest or understanding to continue his vision.
Video Highlights
