Our medical doctor Dr. Sarah Gaier is currently living and working at Concordia research station, one of the most remote research stations on Earth. During her time there, Sarah has been capturing the stars, auroras and night skies above the station.
Concordia experiences months of near-total darkness during the polar winter, with temperatures that can fall as low as –85°C. Far from populated areas and light pollution, it offers remarkable views of the Antarctic sky, including auroras that frequently occur over Earth’s polar regions.
Each winter, a small, multicultural crew remains at the station, isolated from the outside world for months. This makes Concordia a valuable place to study how people adapt physically and psychologically to prolonged isolation, confinement and extreme conditions.
This research can help us better understand some of the challenges astronauts could face on future long-duration missions beyond Earth.
