An investigation of moisture probe data has discovered that about 20% of fields may have no cotton root development below 50cm in the profile. It is suspected that more frequent irrigation scheduling may be adversely interacting with soil sodicity to cause a decline in soil structure at depth. Brendan Griffiths of UNE discusses a soil constraints project investigating this issue.
