Look What I Found in a 90-year-old Home Economics Textbook
What can a 90-year-old Home Economics textbook teach us about getting dressed?
I have this copy of The Home Economics Omnibus (published in 1936), a textbook written for teachers instructing senior high school girls in Home Economics. Tucked inside was a chapter called "The Well-Dressed Girl," an entire lesson on how young women should dress, behave, and present themselves to the world.
I expected it to be completely outdated.
Instead, I found myself laughing at some of the advice, rolling my eyes at other parts... and occasionally stopping to think, "That's actually not bad advice."
In this video, we're reading through the chapter together, comparing its ideas with modern life, and separating the timeless wisdom from the very 1930s expectations. Along the way we'll talk about vintage fashion, personal style, confidence, second-hand clothing, quality versus quantity, and why some of these ideas still resonate nearly ninety years later.
