Meet Microphis heterosoma, the Longmouth Pipefish — one of the strangest freshwater fish I’ve had the chance to feature.
With an incredibly long, tubular snout and a body that looks unlike almost anything else in the freshwater hobby, these fish are specialized micro-predators built to hunt tiny aquatic prey. In this video, we take a closer look at the Longmouth Pipefish, how they feed, what they eat, their aquarium requirements, tankmate considerations, and some of the challenges that come with keeping such a specialized fish.
We’ll also touch on their fascinating reproductive behavior, where females transfer their eggs to males, which then carry and protect the developing eggs.
