A couple of years ago when I was hiking in Reynolds Park near Conifer, CO (video below), I saw a bunch of awesome looking peaks towards the south in front of Pikes Peak, and became interested in exploring some of those mountains. Long Scraggy Peak is one that stands out due to accessibility and interesting scramble opportunities. At 8796’ it is not the tallest in the area but it’s very prominent. One has to travel 4+ miles of dirt road (FS530, blocked for vehicle access) to get to the base of the peak, for which I took my mountain bike on this occasion, which proved to be the right approach even though I did end up popping a tire towards the end of the road. The climb itself was short but steep. The rock scramble near the summit was fun and the views on top were fantastic. Best of all I didn’t see anyone the whole day other than a biker on the road early in the morning. Total stats from car to car: 11 miles with 2000’ elevation gain
