The man who allegedly beat and tortured his wife nearly to death on Sunday, then almost died in a crash while fleeing, has a criminal history that includes a high-profile ethnic intimidation charge seven years ago in Grand Rapids.
Robert Hornof, now 26, who got jail time for that case, was in critical condition at a Grand Rapids hospital Monday after the assault against his wife, Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler said.
He allegedly tied up his wife, Lola, with a cord and beat her with his fists most of the day Sunday inside their small trailer in Newaygo, Roesler said. "He just beat her relentlessly," he said. "He kept her captive in their house."
Hornof accused her of having an affair with a mutual friend -- something Lola and that friend denied, Roesler said.
