The Logies: Australia’s version of the Emmy Awards—where Tramell Tillman recently made history as the first gay Black man to win his category—assuming anyone was asking the question. Essentially, it’s our television “night of nights,” an annual festival of local stars giving each other trophies. If you haven’t fallen asleep yet, I’m doing my best to feign interest here. But it’s currently plastered all over the news, so I figured I’d better weigh in.
A bit of trivia first: the Logies are named in honour of John Logie Baird, the Scottish engineer who invented the first working television system. I know—celebrating a dead white European man is practically an endorsement of British colonialism. Expect calls to rename them the Gadigal Sky Country, Blak & LGBTQ+ TV Excellence Awards by next year just to ensure full compliance.
Wildlife conservationist and zookeeper, 22-year-old Robert Irwin, made history as the youngest ever host of the awards, kicking off the night with a dance routine. Naturally, as is now mandated for anyone wishing to remain employed in modern television, he delivered a formal Acknowledgement of Country—paying respect to the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation and extending that to all First Nations people, while the celebrity audience nodded along in dutiful, highly-paid solemnity.
Naturally, the host couldn’t resist trying his hand at stand-up comedy, taking predictable jabs at anyone straying from approved opinions. He set his sights on Karl Stefanovic, who lost his job at Channel Nine after daring to interview anti-immigration activist Tommy Robinson on his podcast. Setting up the punchline, Irwin joked: “Unfortunately, Karl Stefanovic didn’t RSVP tonight, which means we didn’t have to hire as many bartenders. But we’ve got him a spare seat, just in case. It’s over there to the right… the FAR right.” The audience erupted, clearly convinced this was peak political satire. About the only thing missing from Irwin’s routine was burning an effigy of Pauline Hanson—who, you might recall, famously featured a caricature of Irwin in her Please Explain series to parody the Queensland Government’s tourism campaign.
Of course, “our ABC” was right there promoting Logies identity politics in their piece highlighting the “key moments.” Comedian Sam Pang won the coveted Gold Logie. How do you think the ABC framed it? Did they praise him as a brilliant comedian and TV host who earnt the top prize? No, they wrote: “Pang is only the second person of colour to win the award, the first being Waleed Aly, who took home the gold in 2016.” What on earth are they talking about? They claim to fight racism, yet they can’t view an accomplishment without viewing it through a racial lens first. They’re the most race-obsessed outfit in town.
They almost had a collective stroke when actress Deborah Mailman was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame. Did they praise her as an acclaimed actress who has spent decades gracing Australian screens and earnt the highest honour in television? No, as expected, her skin colour was treated as the single most important aspect of her career: “Deborah Mailman becomes first Indigenous inductee to Logies Hall of Fame.” She told the ABC: “Times are changing, thankfully, but it’s 2026. To be the first Indigenous person — it’s long overdue. Where the most exciting storytelling is coming from is the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sector.”
Anyway, you know the drill. If you want to be successful in Australian television, you better damn well support the “right” side of politics—or at least pretend to. And obviously, that means the left. Because if you think you can interview someone like Tommy Robinson or admit to voting One Nation and still walk away with a trophy, you can kiss your Logie chances goodbye.
