LOCKED GROOVE is a hand-drawn abstract audiovisual short directed by Emanuele Kabu, exploring repetition as both a visual system and a sonic trance.
Built from simple geometric shapes and inspired by the phenomenon of pareidolia, the film invites viewers to discover shifting forms and patterns that emerge through delay, rhythm, and repetition. What begins as a minimal gesture gradually evolves into something more complex, immersive, and hypnotic.
The project was developed over the past two years in spare moments, though its initial idea dates back to 2021, while Emanuele was completing a music video using a similar technique. Fascinated by how repeated motion could generate unexpected visual complexity, LOCKED GROOVE became an experiment in restraint — adding variation and detail without tipping into excess or visual noise.
Designed as both a standalone video and a potential site-specific installation, LOCKED GROOVE is suited for immersive environments, public art contexts, and exhibition spaces.
The animation was created frame by frame in Rough Animator on iPad and assembled in After Effects. The sound design was composed using samples from a KORG MS-20, KORG MS-2000, and select Creative Commons sources.
